Crystal healing explained

What crystal healing involves, what happens in a session, what people seek from it, what the evidence says, and how to choose a crystal healer in New Zealand.

Crystals are everywhere in New Zealand: in shops, on desks, in pockets and in healing rooms. Crystal healing is the practice of using them in a session with a practitioner. This guide explains what that involves, in plain language, so you can decide whether it is for you.

What crystal healing is

Crystal healing uses stones such as quartz, amethyst, rose quartz, citrine and obsidian. Practitioners believe that each stone carries a particular quality or energy. Rose quartz is linked with love and self-kindness. Amethyst with calm and clarity. Black tourmaline with protection. Clear quartz with focus and amplification.

In a session, the practitioner places stones on or around your body. Many work with the chakras, a set of energy centres described in Indian traditions, running from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. Each chakra has a colour, and stones are often matched by colour. Others place stones in a grid around the room or work intuitively.

People have used stones this way for a very long time. Ancient Egyptian, Greek and Chinese cultures all used crystals as amulets and remedies. The modern practice grew in the 1970s and 1980s alongside the wider New Age movement.

What people seek from it

Most people who book a crystal healing session are not looking for a cure. They are looking for:

Those are reasonable things to want, and a good session often delivers them.

What the evidence says

It is important to be honest here. There is no peer-reviewed scientific evidence that crystals have any effect on the body. Studies that compared real crystals with fakes found that people reported the same sensations either way. The scientific view is that any benefit comes from relaxation, attention, expectation and the setting, not from the stones themselves.

That does not make the experience worthless. Rest, attention and ritual matter to people. But it does mean that crystal healing should never replace medical care. Healthify, the New Zealand health information site, advises that before using any complementary or alternative practice you should “talk with your doctor and other healthcare providers about it”. That is good advice.

What happens in a session

Arrival and conversation. The practitioner asks what brings you in and how you are feeling. Five to fifteen minutes.

Settling. You lie down, fully clothed, on a table or a mat. The room is usually quiet, often with soft lighting and music.

Placement. The practitioner chooses stones and places them on or beside your body. They may hold a stone above you, pass a wand over you, or place a grid around the table. Some combine this with hands-on energy work, guided breathing or sound.

Rest. You lie still for twenty to forty minutes. People report warmth, tingling, tears, deep relaxation or nothing much. All are normal.

Closing. The stones are removed, you sit up slowly, and the practitioner may talk through what they noticed. Some suggest a stone to take home or carry.

A session usually runs from 45 to 90 minutes. Fees are similar to Reiki. See what readings and healing sessions cost.

Choosing a crystal healer in New Zealand

Crystal healing is not a regulated profession in New Zealand. There is no national register or required qualification. That means you need to do your own checks.

Crystals at home

Many people never book a session and simply keep crystals around them. There is no harm in that. Choose stones you like the look and feel of. Rinse them in water if the stone can take it, since some, like selenite, dissolve. Be sensible with claims on packaging, and never swallow crystal “elixirs” made with stones that may contain metals or minerals that are unsafe.

Where crystal healing fits

Crystal healing sits within a family of practices that work with the idea of energy. If you are curious about how it compares with Reiki, pranic healing and others, read energy healing: Reiki, pranic and other approaches compared. If you are drawn to the spiritual side, what happens in a spiritual healing session may help.

A last word

Enjoy crystal healing for what it offers: rest, care and a moment of meaning. Keep seeing your doctor for anything medical. Both can sit together in a full life.

This guide describes what a practice involves and what people seek from it. It is general information, not medical advice. These services do not replace care from a registered health professional. If you have a health concern, talk with your doctor or call Healthline on 0800 611 116.
